A fundamental shift in electoral behaviour

The final phase of voting for the 18th Lok Sabha has concluded, and now the world’s largest electorate eagerly awaits the results. People abroad, who have varied reasons for their interest in New Delhi’s political landscape, are keenly watching the outcome of the election. Over the years, when each election ends, I am reminded of Winston Churchill, the British prime minister during World War II who once arrogantly claimed that democracy in India would not survive beyond the third general election. But India’s so-called “men of straw” have delivered a fitting response to such colonial assertions.

In her deeply compelling study of women’s experiences, Chup, author Deepa Narayan argues that in India, a culture of invisibility is forced upon women since their very births. Such a culture – which trains women to deny their bodies and sexuality, discourages them from having a voice and an identity and simply wills them not to exist – provides a fertile breeding ground for men in positions of power to routinely abuse and silence women.

Need to look at poll data without bias

To understand the changes in Indian electoral politics, many have turned to exit poll and post poll data. But uncritical or biased analysis of survey data can do more harm than good, by producing purported “facts” about caste and communities.
